Design review guideline recommendations

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is an independent Canadian federal government agency whose mission is to regulate the use of nuclear energy and material to protect health, safety, security and the environment. CNSC staff are in the process of developing regulatory design review guidelines in preparation for the potential of licensing new Nuclear Power Plant (s) (NPP) including structures, systems, and components (SSC’s). The design review guidelines will be used by CNSC staff to review and assess submissions for new NPP.

Scanscot Technology has been rewarded a contract “Recommendations on Assessing Civil Structures for New Nuclear Power Plants” with the main purpose to provide design acceptance criteria and review guidance, including design and analysis methodology, regarding all safety-related Civil Structures, including reactor containments. The guidance provide sufficient technical direction and acceptance criteria to ensure that the submission made for proposed NPP comply with the applicable safety objectives, safety principles and safety criteria set forth in the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) and associated regulations for the life cycle of the NPP (design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning).

The recommendations developed under this contract will be used by CNSC staff to generate regulatory design review guidelines for assessing the acceptability of design submissions.
